ROOFING
Installing stone coated metal roof tiles is faster and simpler than traditional clay or concrete tiles — thanks to their lightweight design and interlocking system. This guide walks you through every step, from preparation to the final ridge cap, with practical tips to avoid the most common mistakes.
Before starting, gather the following:
Start with a clean, dry roof deck. Install a high-quality breathable waterproof underlayment across the entire roof surface — this is your secondary water barrier. Overlap each roll by at least 150mm horizontally and 100mm vertically. Secure with clout nails. Pay special attention to valleys, chimneys, and skylights — these are the most leak-prone areas.
For projects in hurricane-prone zones, add a self-adhesive ice-and-water shield along the eaves for extra protection.
Install horizontal timber battens perpendicular to the rafters. Critical: batten spacing must be 370mm center-to-center for standard Fuda stone coated tiles. This spacing ensures proper overlap and aligns the interlocking edges perfectly. Use a chalk line to mark each row — don't eyeball it.
Fix battens with galvanized nails or screws into every rafter. Check spacing with a template jig at both ends and the middle of every row to catch drifting early. If your roof pitch is below 15°, reduce spacing to 350mm for tighter overlap.
The first row is the foundation of the entire roof — get it right and the rest falls into place. Start from the bottom-left corner and work rightward. Overhang the first tile 50-60mm beyond the fascia board for proper drip clearance. Secure each tile with 4 stainless steel screws through the pre-drilled nail holes, with EPDM washers.
Check alignment after the first 3-4 tiles with a straight edge. If anything shifts, fix it now — correcting a misaligned first row later means tearing up half the roof.
For the second row and beyond, stagger each tile by half its width relative to the row below — just like laying bricks. This breaks up water channels, improves wind resistance, and creates a more natural, visually appealing pattern. Slide each tile's interlocking edge firmly into its neighbor's groove before fastening. Work row by row, stepping up the roof, and check alignment every 3 rows.
Where tiles need to be cut — around vents, chimneys, or at gable ends — mark with a pencil and cut with tin snips. Always wear gloves; cut edges are sharp.
Once all field tiles are laid, install ridge caps along the apex. Start from the end opposite prevailing wind direction. Each ridge cap overlaps the previous by 100mm. Secure with two screws per side. Apply a bead of exterior-grade sealant under each overlap. For hip ridges, miter-cut caps to meet cleanly at the peak.
Install barge boards and gable trim last to close off exposed edges and give the roof a clean, finished look.
